Rev. Howard Irwin
Howard has been pastor of First Baptist Church of Woodlawn since May of 2008. Previously he served four American Baptist Churches all in the Pittsburgh area. He is married to the Rev. Carol Ross Irwin who is a chaplain at Trinity Health System, and is a teaching Pastor at our church. They have 3 adult daughters.
In addition to being a pastor, he is also a licensed clinical social worker in Pennsylvania and does marital, mental health and substance abuse counseling. His interests include reading (particularly John Grisham novels), running (very slowly), disc golf (you don’t know what fun is until you’ve thrown a Frisbee through the woods at a metal basket on a pole), and cooking (or at least eating). He’s maintained a transformational 140-pound weight loss for more than10 years.
With humor (or at least attempts at it) and stories, Pastor Howard takes the truths of the Bible and applies them to living in today’s world.
Rev. Carol Ross Irwin
Rev. Carol Ross Irwin grew up in Tennessee and Georgia (as you will quickly be able to tell as you listen to her.) Growing up in the South, Carol had never seen a female pastor. She says the way that she knew the call really was from God is that her imagination is not that good. Carol has been involved in mentoring young female pastors, and in providing a role model to let young girls know that God does call women into ministry.
Carol is now serving as a chaplain at Trinity Health System in Steubenville, OH. She has previously served several other healthcare institutions, as well as being a pastor. Carol has been active in the PBA (Pittsburgh Baptist Association), and ABCOPAD (American Baptist Churches of PA and Delaware).
Since the children are grown, Carol likes to spoil her “good boy” Albert, a basset hound who is not aware of the fact that he is actually a dog. Carol enjoys reading, pool walking with the neighbors, and baking—a skill of which her husband always is supportive.
